How a pandemic sparked a movement — and what keeps us going.
When COVID-19 shuttered schools across the country, the students who were already struggling fell furthest behind. In 2020, a group of university students from UC Davis, UCLA, Christopher Newport University, and Saint Mary's College refused to watch that happen. They came together online, organized a volunteer tutoring program, and built what would become EGIL.
What started as an emergency response became a sustained mission: to ensure that underprivileged K-12 students in Sacramento always have access to academic support, caring mentors, and a community that believes in them.
